At Battle Ground High School, students in the Wood Design 2 course are recognized each year for demonstrating outstanding character traits that contribute to success both in the shop and beyond. Taught by Chet Weatherl, the course emphasizes professionalism, maturity and perseverance alongside woodworking skills. At the end of the school year, one student from each class period is honored in each category.
Professionalism
This award, represented by a flashlight, recognizes students who shine a light and lead others.
Ryan Erickson was recognized for consistently staying on task and setting a positive example for his classmates.
Ky Uskoski earned the award for helping others whenever needed and demonstrating a strong ability to retain and apply information.
Abraham Cosovan was honored as a hardworking student who was always willing to lend a hand to his classmates.
Maturity
This award is symbolized by a tape measure for those who consistently "measure up" through responsible behavior.
Abigail Kent was selected for being mature and respectful throughout the year.
Karsten Simonson served as a positive role model for his classmates and was always willing to help others.
Samuel Schmidt earned recognition for consistently staying on task and maintaining a willingness to listen and learn.
Perseverance
The saw-shaped push stick award symbolizes pushing through challenges.
Kennadie Fjeldos was recognized for overcoming significant obstacles and never giving up on her goals.
Treven Hersey earned the award for his willingness to work through any difficulties that arose along the way.
Colton Diekmann was honored for his dedication to following through on his project designs and completing his work successfully.
Weatherl noted that students who participate in woodshop gain much more than woodworking knowledge. “The skills and character traits promoted in our program help develop a good work ethic in each student,” he said, citing his favorite quote: "When there is no reward for good work ethic and no consequence for poor work ethic, there is no motivation."
Congratulations to these students for demonstrating character, dedication and work ethic!
