Earlier this month, students got to experience local flavors as part of Taste Washington Day. The event is a celebration of local food in school meals, and is held annually during National Farm to School Month.
At Glenwood Heights Primary, third graders enjoyed a farmers market experience designed to introduce them to locally grown foods. Each student received a shopping bag and $10 in “cub money” to spend at the market, which featured an assortment of locally grown products, including plums, pears, apples, grape and cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplants, honey and tomatillos. Students had the opportunity to browse the produce and learn more about where their food comes from.
Expanding the celebration across the district, Battle Ground school cafeterias featured fresh, locally grown bell peppers from Silverstar Farm Market. High school students had the chance to sample Lucy Glo pink apples.
Thank you to Chartwells, the district's nutrition services provider, for making these activities possible and encouraging students to explore foods found right here in Washington.
